What to wear for your Headshot Session

Selecting the ideal attire for your headshot session can be a challenging decision.
Here are some tips and visual suggestions to help you choose the outfit you will feel fabulous and confident in.

WEAR SOLID AND NEUTRAL COLOURS
Solid and neutral colours like black, grey or brown are a good choice for your headshot because they’re timeless. Your headshot won’t looked dated in a few years when styles change.

Avoid wearing all white as our eyes are attracted to the highest contrast in an image and the focus will be off your face. If you want to wear a white shirt, wear a suit jacket to break it up.

MIX IT UP
Bring a few outfits that are casual and professional or different colours and tones. This will give you variety when choosing an image to use for any occasion.

ACCESSORIZE
As always, keep it simple and timeless so you can use your headshot for a few years.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE FUN
Have fun showcasing your wonderful personality with your outfit choices.

AVOID WEARING
Clothing with writing or logos.
Florals, polka dots, stripes or checkered patterns.
Low-cut neck lines and turtleneck sweaters.
Fluorescent colours such as pink as they cause a colour cast on skin.

OVERALL
Wear well-fitted freshly pressed clothing that you feel comfortable and confident in.
If playful and colourful is part of your brand then go for it!

Mustafa Akhtar || West End Vancouver Headshots

I recently photographed Vancouver Realtor Mustafa Akhtar in Vancouver’s West End neighbourhood.
Mustafa serves clients in the West End and wanted to utilize some of the older buildings for his new branding images.
Collaborating and getting to know him was a pleasure. As we walked through the neighborhood, he shared stories about the history of some of the older buildings and why he loved them.

I worked with Belle to get Headshots done… it was not only fun to do the shoot with her, but the results are fantastic.

Kate Pierre || Granville Island Headshots

Kate Pierre is the owner and designer at KATE&FRANCES DESIGN.
Kate is a visionary who couldn't find the clothing she desired to express her true self. Her vision came to life in the form of versatile, body-friendly dresses that exude style and comfort. In fact, she’s wearing one of her designs in these portraits.
Kate contacted me to create portraits to launch a new career path and website. Her services will be a kaleidoscope of fashion industry consulting, career advice, and education—all rolled into one stylish package.
The portrait setting couldn't have been more perfect. Granville Island's vibrant atmosphere, with its colourful textured walls, provided an ideal backdrop for capturing Kate's personality.
As Kate prepares to unveil her new Fashion Consultant website, I can't help but feel proud to have played a part in this visual storytelling experience with her.

Andrea Reimer Headshot Session

I officially met Andrea Reimer when she spoke during the Granville Island Women’s Storytelling Walk I photographed.
Previously I had heard her speak at a luncheon where she shared a personal life experience and I was brought to tears.
I love the testimonial she gave me. It might be the most honest one I’ve received yet.

I *hate* having my photo taken. Belle turned what is usually a torturous process into a lot of fun. Like going to the dentist and finding out you like the dentist!

John Horodyski - Optimity Advisors

John Horodyski, King of the Pocket Squares, also known as an expert in Digital Asset Management (DAM).
I don’t even know what that means. I do know I loved the time we spent together and the portraits we created.
John is caring, funny and intelligent. I think these images captured him perfectly.

Belle is professional, personable, and provides an excellent experience for her photography sessions. Great photographers not only take good photos, but also care about the quality of their work, and make their clients feel good and at ease.
Belle is a true artist behind the lens with a keen eye to masterfully capture the best moments. I highly recommend.

Anita Melin - Open Door Communications

Anita Melin helped me when my relationship and career were ending, and I was leaving my small Kootenay town to study photography in the big city. It was a lot of change and I needed guidance to make the transition and those big life decisions.
Anita recently reached out to me as her counselling business had moved online and she needed a headshot for her new website.
I was visiting family close by her in Revelstoke and she made the drive up to meet me for her session. I knew the perfect location and we created these lovely portraits at sunset at the Revelstoke Greenbelt.
Since she was close to a national park she took advantage and did some hiking the day after her session.
I think these portraits capture her free spirit and her love of nature beautifully.
